Grasses - conditions of execution of treatment and pretreatment

To make the different types of biomass pumpable so they could be treated with BioBANG technology, the samples were first diluted and then cavitated. This operation is strictly linked to the performance of laboratory tests. In the case of real scale applications, dilution will depend on the configuration of the installation. Various chemical and physical tests were performed for each product. Some simplified tests were also performed to clearly demonstrate to users the effects that breaking up biomass has on the treatment and pretreatment.

  1. Visual examination: to show the intensive effect breaking up fibres treated with BioBANG has compared to non-cavitated biomass, treated and untreated products were poured into a container and then pressed in the hand. This simple operation quickly shows the degree to which the material is broken up;

  2. Dynamic viscosity on a sloping surface: the two products, treated and untreated, are poured onto a sloping surface with a constant incline. The speed at which they slide down clearly shows the change in viscosity of products treated with BioBANG technology;

  3. Transparent container: the treatment produces a homogeneous product with a low degree of separation, suitable for optimum mixing in digesters;

  4. Biomethanation test (BMP): with this technique, treated and untreated biomass was analysed to verify the effect of BioBANG’s hydrodynamic cavitation technique on methane production. The tests were conducted by an external laboratory with extensive experience in the field;

  5. Wet particle size: the technique is used to assess distribution of the dry material into various size categories before and after the treatment with BioBANG. The results show how the size of the organic matter is changed so that users can assess if the degree to which the material is broken up complies with their requirements.
